Aus4Skills supports gender mainstreaming in education for pedagogical institutions

Aus4Skills, in partnership with the Department of Teachers and Education Administrators (DTEA),  Ministry of Education and Training (MOET), organized a 2-day training course aimed at integrating gender equality into teacher training curricula. This initiative underscores Australia’s dedication to fostering gender equality and inclusiveness in all of its educational collaborations with Vietnam.

Hosted at Hanoi University of Science and Technology, the training was joined by over 30 core teachers specialising in psychology and education sciences throughout Vietnam. The participants organised insightful discussions on analysing existing gaps in teacher training programs and improving their capacity to integrate gender content in current pedagogical training curricula.

The workshop gives participants an overview of gender-integrated education trends internationally and in Vietnam. A highly informative panel discussion, led by Dr Pham Tuan Anh, Deputy Director General, DTEA, dove into the extensive effort made in gender equality and gender-related training by not just MOET, but also notable universities such as Thai Nguyen University and Saigon University.

Ms Cara Ellickson, Aus4Skills Gender Equality, Disability and Social Inclusion (GEDSI) Advisor shared a range of best practices of gender-integrated training and information internationally and from Australia. She underlines the importance of gender mainstreaming and analysis in pedagogy, and how gender analysis can identify curricula that exacerbate gender inequalities and promote practices that advance gender equality.

The workshop spent a substantial amount of time on practical group activities, focusing on mainstreaming gender-responsive pedagogy in educational psychology and education studies. The participants had many opportunities to brainstorm and engage in constructive discussions, led by national experts Ms Pham Thu Hien, the former vice director of the Centre for Gender Studies and Women’s Leadership, Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Ms Bui Thanh Xuan, Deputy Director of the Continuing Education Division of the Vietnam National Institute of Education Sciences.

To conclude the workshop, the experts and participants echoed that gender mainstreaming foundational definition should be maintained so that women and men can benefit equally and inequality is not perpetuated.

Australia’s collaboration with MOET reaffirms its commitment to gender equality and inclusiveness in Vietnam’s education sector. This training course is part of the Aus4Skills Higher Education Capacity Building (HECB) support, aiming to enhance higher education quality in Vietnam.

Participants were highly appreciative and satisfied with the workshop’s contents, with most wishing for a longer duration for more in-depth analysis

Gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI) considerations are fully integrated into all HECB outcomes and activities. HECB aims to integrate gender equality content into teacher training curricula and deliver gender-integrated training courses to implement Vietnam’s National Strategy on Gender Equality for 2021-2030, as well as MOET’s Action plan on mainstreaming gender equality at pedagogical institutions.
