University Quality Assurance: International experience and application to Vietnam’s universities

Education and Times Newspaper – On August 17, 2018, in Thai Nguyen, Aus4Skills in collaboration with Thai Nguyen University and Queensland University of Technology (QUT) organised a workshop on university quality assurance.

The workshop’s participants were Prof. Dr. Dang Van Minh, Vice President of Thai Nguyen University, Dr. Ralf Muhlberger, Educational Expert, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Aus4Skills representatives, and nearly 200 academic leaders and lecturers from Thai Nguyen University and its member universities.

The workshop is an activity under an Australia Award Short Course in University Quality Assurance (under the ‘Improving Quality of Universities in the Northern Mountainous Region’ component of Aus4Skills), implemented by Queensland University of Technology from March to October 2018. The course was designed for 20 academic staff from Thai Nguyen University, University of Agriculture and Forestry (Thai Nguyen University), and Tay Bac University.

Applying the newly gained skills and knowledge from university quality assurance models at Australian universities, deans and senior academic managers of the universities have developed proposals to improve their university quality assurance. University quality assurance is one of the pivotal requirements for university accreditation by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training.

“Coming back from Australia, participants of the Australia Award Short Course in University Quality Assurance have translated what they learned into effective implementation plans and projects. They are ‘champions for change’ towards improved university quality assurance at Thai Nguyen University and its member universities” said Prof. Dr. Dang Van Minh, Vice President of Thai Nguyen University. In this workshop, international experts shared university quality assurance content to a larger group of academic staff, lecturers and supported the course’s participants in applying the knowledge and skills they had learnt to the workplace.

In this one-day workshop, Dr. Ralf Muhlberger presented a number of topics, including: Overview on University Quality Assurance; Mechanisms, Policies, and Implementation Tools for Quality Assurance; Monitoring and Evaluation; Strategic Planning Framework for university quality assurance at national level and within Queensland University of Technology (QUT). In addition, the workshop held a group discussion using the World Café method – Transition to university quality assurance culture.

Earlier, on August 14, 2018 a workshop on University Quality Assurance was also held at Tay Bac University. In addition to the workshop, Tay Bac University is conducting a self-evaluation process. Under the ‘Improving Quality of Universities in the Northern Mountainous Region’ component of Aus4Skills, consultants on university accreditation have been invited to support Tay Bac University in this activity in the period from July to November 2018.
