Nguyen The Trung: Pioneer CEO in the Industry 4.0 Revolution

Developing a system of digital governance, or laying the foundation for STEM education in Vietnam – these two are among many outstanding contributions of Nguyen The Trung – an Australian Awards Scholarship alumnus and CEO of DTT Technology Joint Stock Company.

Introducing STEM Education Coalition

Originally a student from Hanoi HUS High School for Gifted Students, majoring in mathematics, Nguyen The Trung won the Silver Medal at the 36th International Mathematical Olympiad in Canada in 1995. From 1996 to 2001, he studied Computer Science at the University of Technology Sydney as a recipient of an Australia Awards Scholarship.

After Trung returned to Vietnam and established DTT in 2001, his business quickly became a great success, starting off as a global software manufacturer with branches in the US, Europe, and Singapore. Nevertheless, being aware of the Vietnamese people’s great creative potential, Trung decided to develop IT solutions for Vietnam and introduce the STEM Education to Vietnamese children.

STEM Education, according to Trung, offers its participants massive benefits by providing essential knowledge and skills related to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Not only mastering theoretical aspects, students will also gain the capability to apply the theory, therefore forming useful skill sets and creating practical products for daily life.

Under Trung’s management, a number of national conferences have been held in big cities, such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Danang and Can Tho, as well as in distant provinces including Dak Nong, allowing students from across the country to get equal access and exposure to modern technologies.

So far, thousands of Vietnamese students have benefited from the STEM Education in second grade. Trung and his colleagues are also expanding the number subjects within the STEM system, including STEM – Computer Science, STEM – Entertainment Technology, STEM – Internet of Things, etc.

Developing Digital Governance

With ten years’ experience in operating digital governance systems on the basis of Open eGovPlatform (OEP), as well as other societal systems, Trung’s company has grown to become a leader in its field.

‘In the field of e-Government, what we believe and strive for is to build public confidence that such governing systems can be made entirely by Vietnamese companies without any reliance on foreign partners,’ said Trung. This statement could not have better evidence than the Outstanding Prize for Best Digital Divide in the WeGO Awards 2014, that Trung’s digital governing model for Danang City received, outclassing many strong contenders in the region. Such international recognition helped to replicate the system on a national scale, following the Prime Minister’s encouragement.

Trung himself is also a member of the National Committee on Information Technology’s Counseling Board and has co-developed several national programs on the Industry 4.0 and sectoral modernisation. ‘The learning by doing had a huge impact on my working experience in Vietnam. No matter how big our job is – for instance, advising the Vietnamese Government on the Industry 4.0 Revolution Program – there still need to be practical actions to implement the ideas,’ Trung explained.

With the goal of keeping pace with Industry 4.0, DTT Joint Stock Company has taken the lead in developing the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence, as well as providing people’s access to modern technology and living environments.

Such efforts made by Trung throughout all these years, after all, could only be explained by his burning desire to apply global achievements in Vietnam, bringing information technology closer to people, making contributions to the development of Vietnam and bringing the country closer to regional standards.
