Lou De Castro Myles and her contributions to Vietnam’s vocational training in logistics sector

With more than 40 years of experience in developing and consulting training curriculum for projects, Ms. Lou De Castro Myles, an International Consultant and Teaching Specialist, Queensland University of Technology, Australia, is also well-known as an important contributor to vocational training for logistics sector in Vietnam, through Aus4Skills program.

We were invited to a lecture of Ms. Lou De Castro Myles, as part of a short training course provided by Aus4Skills in Ben Tre province on “Strategy Development and Competency-based training for occupational standards in logistics industry”.

“In her lectures, Ms. Lou De Castro Myles shared a lot of knowledge, such as effective student enrollment, curriculum design in accordance with occupational standards and logistics industry needs, student assessment methods.” – shared Ms. Le Thi Hanh Xuan, a lecturer from Thu Duc College of Technology, Ho Chi Minh City and one of the course’s participants.

As a process expert, in her lectures, Lou De Castro Myles often acts as a coordinator by raising issues, asking students to think about feasible solutions. Learners then discuss in team to come up with solutions and Ms. Lou De Castro Myles will assist in finding solutions that are most suited to the current contexts of logistics sector in Vietnam.

This course in Ben Tre is tailored for teachers of vocational training schools in the logistics industry, thus Ms. Lou De Castro Myles has provided tools for participants to apply in their lectures directly. As the most important factor in the vocational education process is listening skills, she helped teachers understand the role of vocational education in the educational system. This has important implications for the labor market in the logistics industry today. In addition, she also helped teachers understand that they are leaders who help students apply their knowledge in the workplace.

“My students are all very knowledgeable but they do not know how to apply their knowledge, so I designed this training program based on the learners’ knowledge to build and implement the curriculum framework. I often use the learning method that comes with practice. Because when teachers learn about occupational standards, and participate in practical exercises in this course, when they return to the school, they will conduct the training more effectively. And this has a huge impact on creating highly-skilled and professional human resources that Vietnam needs in the logistics industry”. – said Ms. Lou De Castro Myles on how she designed training framework for the short training course on vocational education for logistics sector.

As a demanding person at work, after each course, Ms. Lou De Castro Myles often requires students to develop an action plan to apply the knowledge learned in the course. Although Lou De Castro Myles is currently working on six projects in six different countries, she often spends around one hour per day to advise lecturers and companies who have involved in the Aus4Skills’s courses and asked for her support.

“During the consultation, they will provide specific issues and potential solutions. In addition, they need to define the implementation deadline after receiving my advice.” – shared educational expert Ms. Lou De Castro Myles.

Educational expert Lou De Castro Myles has developed not only training framework under the Aus4Skills program, but also field visit program for Vietnamese enterprises’ leaders and university lecturers to Australia to learn about business models in the logistics industry. These programs contributed to stronger connections between the schools and businesses to create employment opportunities for graduated students.
