60 Australia Awards Scholarships for Vietnamese citizens

Persons with disabilities, ethnic minority people and people from rural areas are strongly encouraged to apply for Australian Award Scholarships (AAS)

Australia Awards scholarships are offered to the next generation of Vietnamese leaders to pursue their master’s degrees in Australia. Through study and research, scholarship recipients develop the skills and knowledge to drive change and contribute to the development of Vietnam. They will also have the opportunity to experience Australian culture, meet new friends and study at world-class institutions in Australia. The Australian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that 60 excellent Vietnamese candidates would be awarded the AAS in 2023.

Persons with disabilities, ethnic minority people and people from rurally disadvantaged areas are strongly encouraged to apply for the AAS. A support scheme is available to assist equal participation by these applicants. They are also supported to improve their English proficiency if they manage to win the scholarships. Notably, the AAS can even provide care givers for students with disabilities to help them during their time in Australia.

After completing a Master of International Trade and Development at the University of Adelaide in late 2017, Ms. Phuong returned to work at VCCI. She is now the director of VCCI’s FTA International Trade Center (Hanoi branch).

Since her return, Ms. Phuong has been highly active in promoting the engagement between Vietnamese businesses and foreign markets. Her efforts have been especially focussed on assisting Vietnamese businesses to understand and utilise new trade agreements of Vietnam, such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).

Sharing about her master course in Australia funded by the AAS, Phuong revealed: “I think the most precious thing I learned is not just the knowledge but also the skills and tools that my lecturers in Australia bestowed me. Especially in my field, they taught me research methodologies and statistics analysing skills for doing research that I have helped me to gain certain success in international trade activities”.

He shared his journey to pursue the scholarship: “I learned about the AAS while working at my current organisation. With the goal to study abroad to expand my knowledge and experience, I began finding information about scholarship requirements and the selection procedure early on. Six months prior to the scholarship application opening, I began to figure out what I needed to do to meet the scholarship selection criteria, such as taking the IELTS exam, identifying priorities and challenges at work, and getting details about courses in Australia. The application procedure is also quite simple, with specific questions and guidelines, which helped me to swiftly complete my application”. He added: “If you are interested in the Australia Awards Scholarships, please regularly visit their website for updates”.

“Since 1974, over 6,000 Vietnamese students have studied at Australian tertiary institutions through Australian Government scholarships. Besides enduring friendships and unforgettable memories, many Australia Awards alumni have made important and meaningful contributions to the development of Vietnam” said Mr. Andrew Goledzinowsky, the Australian Ambassador in Vietnam.

Applicants will be assessed against a set of criteria including academic competence, potential outcome, specifically the contribution to development outcomes in Vietnam and the Vietnam-Australia relationship, professional and personal leadership attributes including relevant work experience.

Scholarship recipients will receive scholarships benefits including return air travel, a one-off establishment allowance on arrival, full tuition fees, contribution to living expenses, introductory academic program, overseas student health cover for the duration of the scholarship, supplementary academic support, fieldwork allowance for research students and masters by coursework which has a compulsory fieldwork component.

Successful applicants will be required to attend pre-departure briefings, and pre-departure English language training in Vietnam of up to 12 months (depending on applicants’ English level), if they do not achieve an Academic IELTS result with an overall score of at least 6.5, with no band less than 6.0 or an equivalent TOEFL or PTE score.
